YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

December 16, 2014 by Lisa D. Anderson

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

We’ve all said it: You get what you pay for!

This is not just a statement, it’s the common law of business. The value of what you get is determined by the price you pay. Pay the lowest price, you get the lowest value. It’s just that simple.

The late and great philosopher, John Ruskin said it best. “It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money – that’s all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business prohibits paying a little and getting a lot – it can’t be done.”

We’ve all been in those situations where we decided to go for the cheaper price just to add to our frustrations of receiving an incomplete or inefficient job. In the end, we wish we chose the more expensive item because the value would have lingered.

A few years ago, my husband and I needed to have a few rooms painted in our house. We interviewed several painters with prices that varied significantly. After hours of considering our options, we went with the lowest priced painter. We figured, painting is painting. It’s not necessary to pay a fortune for that service. Painters come a dime a dozen, so let’s pick the sole proprietor and save.

WRONG ANSWER!! The painter we selected was disorganized, sloppy, and SLOW…..and he didn’t finish the job!

We spent hours pleading with him to come back and complete his work. In the end, we paid significantly more for the job than what we would have paid if we went to the company with the higher prices.  We had the most expensive painters come in and fix and complete the job the cheaper painter started. The most expensive painters had a team that was able to get the job done in record time and with perfection!

We now understand the value of making the right selection. Instead of looking at the price, we now look at the value of what we want to receive. We know through first hand experience that cheap is rarely right.

This is also true in business. Finding the cheapest employees yields sloppy and inefficient results. Stop looking for savings and look for quality and value – two things you will pay more for in the front end.

What is it costing you NOT to receive the help you need right now? Is it costing you time? Is it costing you energy? Is it costing you brain power? Is it costing you precious quality time with your family, friends and loved ones? Is it costing you peace of mind?  What is it costing you to continue in your repeat cycles, year after year, without resolution? What is it really costing you?

One of my philosophies is you can either pay now or you can pay later. However, the cost of later is significantly greater. There is value in paying now. You receive the value of NOW. You receive the value of knowledge and expertise. You receive the value of time. Your receive the value of energy. You receive the value of efficiency. You just simply receive value.

So, the next time you are searching for a solution, consider the cost of paying less or the value of paying more.

This has become my favorite episode because it helped me see my approach to finding and meeting prospects was wrong which is why I have difficulty closing the sale. No more chasing the wrong prospects! I am going to narrow my focus to three industries and set an agenda for every meeting. I need to get this episode transcribed because it contains so much practical and valuable information.

  • Review for the podcast of Tamara Haskins

Congratulations! I listened to Tamara's interview today with Lisa Anderson on her podcast over linkedIn. I found it very well presented with and easy to follow. It reminded me of our conversation we had in Tamara's office a few weeks ago. The material was well prepared and the delivery was excellent. The tone of her voice was very appropriate and the language was professional but accessible to the layman. Really Great interview! The moderator was also excellent in that the types of questions she asked of you were very important and tailored to her audience who are small business owners.

    Great work both of you!

Regarding the podcast with Patricia Daniels, How Having a Business Coach Has Moved The Needle On My Business, I wanted to offer the following:

Very strong interview...discussion between friends and business partners. Lisa, great job, as usual! Another purposeful conversation had for business owners. Pat! Way to stretch out. This was awesome on behalf of the Ryan Odelle Mance Memorial Scholarship Foundation. And to both of you, I really think this episode can be used for MANY other non-profits - or for for-profit businesses as well - who are starting or preparing for the next season of their business. There were many takeaways, but the one that shines bright for me is knowing and remembering your reason why. And I think organizations - whether it's to start their meetings or to begin and end their retreats - can use portions of this podcast to be inspired, remember why they do what they do, and/or to go into an exercise of discovering or reformatting their why. Additionally, I also envision this podcast being the start of strategy session. Good work and great service!
