In 1492 Christopher Columbus “discovered” America by mistake. He was looking for Asia and got off course. Penicillin was discovered after Alexander Fleming accidentally left dirty petri dishes stacked on his workstation while he went on vacation. In an attempt to clean up upon returning, he noticed a separation of bacteria on one of the dishes which lead to his discovery of the much needed antibiotic. The potato chip was discovered after a Chef Crum in New York decided to play a trick on a patron who complained about the potatoes that were served with his meal. Instead of correcting the dish, Crum sliced potatoes paper thin, fried them until a fork could shatter the potatoes and over salted the invention. When the dish was served to the complaining patron again, he LOVED it. This was the birth of the potato chip.
Many of the world’s great discoveries were made from a mistake which was originally thought of as a failure. However, walking away from a mistake believing you’ve failed may cause you to overlook your greatness. Failures, in most cases, are blessings turned inside out. Stick with the mistake and learn from it and you may be surprised just how success will follow.
I’ve learned first hand that failure does not define you, it refines you. It molds you into the new you. It takes you to places you may have never traveled on your own.
What are you looking to discover? If you miss the mark, will it be a failure or your greatest achievement?
